The mining industry, similar to other heavy industries such as fossil power and steel, presents opportunities for a variety of Belzona solutions. The key problem area encountered by maintenance managers in both extraction and processing is without question downtime. With most mines operating 24 hours a day, unscheduled and lengthy downtime can be very costly.

Within the mining industry, one of the largest application areas for Belzona systems is repair of equipment which has suffered wear due to abrasion. As mined material is transported within the mine between processes, it is channeled using chutes, hoppers, tanks and a range of other storage and transport equipment. Naturally, this equipment will wear away as a result of the movement of the transported media. To combat this, equipment designers will often design extra erosion allowances and thicknesses into their equipment to prolong equipment uptime. However, once this thickness has been lost, the equipment will require repair or replacement.

Selection of the correct repair product is dependent on the type or wear which is occurring – specifically the angle that the wearing material makes when impacting the substrate. This can be defined as the impact angle.

Ductile Erosion

In order to combat ductile erosion, a hard coating is often prescribed. Belzona supplies a range of hard wearing lining options optimized for dry abrasion and for immersed situations.

Long established and recognized as being in the forefront of erosion and corrosion resistance, the Belzona 1300 Series of products are optimized for protection of equipment suffering from erosion-corrosion. Traditionally containing ceramic fillers to create a hard finished coating, Belzona’s latest products, Belzona 1331 and Belzona 1381 incorporate new polymer alloy fillers providing even higher erosion resistance, and facilitating spray application.

For areas of extreme wear, the Belzona 1800 Series of products are recommended. Containing hard solid fillers, these systems are designed to be applied as thick wear layers ensuring continued operation of critical equipment. Belzona 9811 alumina tiles can be incorporated with the Belzona 1800 Series for situations with severe impact abrasion.

Brittle Erosion

In the case of brittle erosion, due to higher impact angle, elastomeric type products are frequently specified. Hard, elastomeric materials will absorb the impact forces and deflect impacting materials. (D&A) resistant elastomers, Belzona 2100 Series Systems are designed to withstand impact attack such as in brittle erosion. Used frequently to repair damage of existing linings, they are also regularly specified for protection of areas where heavy erosion mechanisms are present, such as cavitation in fluid flow equipment.

Key Abrasion Resistant Materials:

  • Belzona® 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) – rebuilds metal surfaces damaged by erosion-corrosion
  • Belzona® 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) – Protects metal surfaces subject to erosion-corrosion
  • Belzona® 1331 – Hand or spray applied, highly erosion resistant coating with over twice the erosion resistance of ceramic filled epoxies.
  • Belzona® 1381 – Highly erosion resistant, hand or spray applied lining using the same new polymer alloy fillers as Belzona® 1331. Capable of resisting immersed temperatures up to 203°F (95°C)
  • Belzona® 1811 (Ceramic Carbide) – Material for lining and grouting areas subject to coarse particle abrasive attack
  • Belzona® 1812 (Ceramic Carbide FP) – A version of Belzona 1811 protects against fine particle abrasive attack.
  • Belzona® 2111 (D&A Hi-Build Elastomer) – Damage and abrasion resistant, high build elastomer for restoring thickness in areas suffering from severe impact damage.
  • Belzona® 2131 (D&A Fluid Elastomer) – Coating grade, damage and abrasion resistant elastomer ideal for large areas subject to impact abrasion.
  • Belzona® 2141 (ACR Fluid Elastomer) – Damage and abrasion resistant elastomer with excellent resistance to the effects of cavitation in fluid flow equipment.
  • Belzona® 9811 – Alumina tiles easily bonds to create a hard wearing abrasion resistant lining.
